Custom Leather Backpacks -- How To Choose A Good One

The gift giving season is upon us, and whether you need to purchase a custom leather backpack for yourself or someone else -- for the holidays or a birthday or some other special event -- here are some important tips and recommendations that you should consider before you make your purchase --
Consider the Size and Weight First
The first thing you need to do is make a decision about what type of custom leather backpack you need. Do you need a small bag just to stow away a few items, or do you need a larger bag with enough room to carry shoes, important files, a laptop computer, etc.? Before you can choose the right custom leather backpack, you have to have some idea of what you need it for. Why? Because the use will largely determine the size and type of custom leather backpack you need.
And you need to give consideration to the planned use first, because that will determine the size -- and the size of the custom leather backpack you choose will determine its weight. Many a consumer has ordered a large-size custom leather backpack, only to find that the item was far too heavy to carry around -- even when empty! So you need to consider not only the carrying capacity but also the weight of your bag.
Not All Leathers Are Created Equal
Once you know the general size and weight requirements for your custom leather backpack, the next step is to consider your options in the types of leather from which it can be constructed. A good general recommendation here is to stay away from thinner, ultra-soft leather. They may feel great as a pair of gloves, but these types of leathers are not good for backpacks -- they are just too delicate and will not last. You need to select a type of leather and that will stand up to hard, daily use without wearing out or falling apart.
One of the very toughest types of leather is called "top grain" leather. Top grain leather is extremely tough because it is taken from the topmost layer of the hide of the animal -- the external layer. Other layers taken from below are not as durable. A custom leather backpack constructed from top grain leather will give a lot of service, even under demanding and abusive conditions.
A Thread and Needle
Another recommendation is to choose a custom leather backpack that has been constructed with a synthetic thread -- such as nylon. Custom leather backpacks that are sewn with cotton or silk thread may break or deteriorate over time, especially if exposed to moisture. Nylon thread, for example, will not deteriorate over time, so the stitching on your custom leather backpack is far less likely to come undone. It is also a good idea to purchase a custom leather backpack constructed with the heaviest weight of thread.
Understanding Hardware Is Not Hard
Another thing you should check out on your planned custom leather backpack purchase is the type of hardware used -- the zippers, snaps, the zipper pulls, rings, fasteners, rivets, buckles. Whenever possible your bags hardware and fasteners should not be made from cheap metal but either stainless steel or solid brass. Why? Because cheap metal is easily bent, or can become corroded or deteriorate over time. If your custom leather backpack has been constructed with stainless steel fittings and solid brass hardware it will truly be able to stand the test of time.
Give Them Some Time
Remember that your custom leather backpack is not something that will be mass produced -- it will be constructed to your personal and individual requirements. By definition this is not something that can be pulled "off the shelf" and sent to you. This means that when you are ordering your custom leather backpack, you should give the craftsman a minimum of several weeks lead time -- in some cases up to a month -- to construct your item and ship it to you. During busy seasons, such as around the holidays, you may need to wait even longer.
Generally, this type of order cannot be placed at the last minute, so plan on ordering your custom leather backpack well in advance of the date when you need to have it. If you have any questions about how long it will take, check with your manufacturer before you place your order. Remember -- it takes TIME to make a quality item.
